Hyakunin Issaku Exhibition

Hyakunin Issaku Exhibition
New. and old

During the Edo period, the "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu" was combined with the "Ukiyoe" and became explosively popular among samurai and townspeople. The "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu", combined with the vivid colors and rich narrative of the "Ukiyoe" and its unique method of expression using "Mitate" has expanded the world of images.
"Mitate" is a technique that compares one thing to another that has something in common. This technique can be associated and effectively convey the scene.
Some of the best examples of the fusion of the "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu" and the "Ukiyoe" are "Ogura Nazore Hyakunin Isshu" and "Hyakunin Isshu Ubaga Etoki"("Ogura Nazore Hyakunin Isshu" is a collaboration between Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Hiroshige, and Kunisada. "Hyakunin Isshu Ubaga Etoki"was created by Katsushika Hokusai).
This “Hyakunin Issaku Exhibition” is an exhibition in which 100 artists create their own unique works based on the motif of the"Ogura Hyakunin Isshu" (Just like the artists of the Edo period). Students from Musashino Art University and various other universities, vocational school students, and working adults are participating in this exhibition.
We did not specify to the exhibitors the form of work to be displayed at the exhibition.
As a result, the exhibition featured a wide range of works in various forms, including paintings, illustrations, three-dimensional works, and videos, making it a worthwhile show.In addition to their own exhibited works, each exhibitor also created picture tag illustrations of a poems that were the motif of their own works.
What we, young people of today, have done is not to remake the "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu", but to rebuild it.
Please enjoy it.
